Buying Your First Surface RC Radio – A Buyer’s Guide from Modelflight

If you are ready to move up to a more powerful RC car or boat, you are going to need a great radio to go with this model. Hence the reason why we wrote this blog post to review and compare some of the best radios for intermediate-level models in order to help you find the one that is best for you.

What to Look For In Your First Surface RC Radio

When buying your first surface radio, there are two things we suggest you take into account in order to make the best purchase. Firstly, make sure that the radio you are looking at is compatible with the car or boat you want to drive. Different models use different receivers, so it is important to check what frequency the radio and receiver use (for example, DSM or DSMR). Secondly, think about the number of channels your transmitter will require. Generally speaking, 2 channels should suffice for most intermediate-level models, but you may require more channels as you progress to higher-level cars and boats.

Surface RC Radios for Intermediate Models

Let’s check out some of the radios we would recommend for intermediate-level models, beginning with the Spektrum DX2E.

Spektrum DX2E

Spektrum DX2E

The DX2E is a great choice for entry-level to intermediate RC models.  It comes with servo reversing, end-point adjustment and includes a Spektrum SR201 receiver. You will find that using the DX2E is made easier with its ergonomic grip. These grips are also interchangeable. The DX2E comes with DSM, DSM2, marine-compatible and DSM-R 2.4GHz protocols, making it a very versatile transmitter. One of the key features of the Spektrum DX2E is that it is compatible with new AVC-Technology-equipped receivers, found in cars such as the Vaterra Halix and Losi TEN-Rally X. AVC Technology will be appearing in more models in the future, so this transmitter is definitely worth considering.

Spektrum DX2L

Another great offering from Spektrum is the DX2L. This radio is commonly used in ready-to-run RC cars and with good reason. It comes with some excellent features, such as throttle and steering end point adjusters. There are also throttle limiting options: low (50%), medium (75%) and high (100%). The DX2L is compatible with all Spektrum DSM, DSM2 and marine surface receivers.

Spektrum DX2M

The DX2M transmitter from Spektrum is especially designed for RTR RC boats (particularly yachts). You will find that this 2-channel radio is quite easy to use and is compatible with DSM, DSM2 and, of course, marine receivers.

Spektrum DX3C

The DX3C radio from Spektrum is slightly more advanced than the other transmitters we have covered, but if you plan on operating more than one RC car and/or boat, it is a worthwhile investment. The DX3C comes with 20-model memory and a Spektrum SR300 DSM 3-channel sport receiver. This radio also features a rolling selector which makes programming easier. Speaking of programming, the DX3C comes with many programmable features such as assignable switches, steering pre-set mix and exponential adjustment. If you are thinking about RC for the long-term, the DX3C is outstanding.

Modelflight’s Recommendation

Out of the 4 transmitters we have reviewed, our recommendation for intermediate-level models is the Spektrum DX2L. We believe this transmitter offers the best value for money. It can be used with RC cars and boats and comes with practical features such as throttle limiting, steering and point adjusters. It’s these extra options that really set the DX2L apart from the DX2E and DX2M. As we mentioned, though, if you are thinking about RC in the long-term, we would suggest investing in the DX3C. With 3 channels and 20 model memory, it is a great foundation as you take the step up to more advanced models.  Although, if you are looking for a quality surface transmitter to help you make the transition to intermediate-level models, the Spektrum DX2L is an excellent choice.
