Given the large range of remote control helIcopters at Modelflight, finding the one that is right for you is not always easy. One of the questions we often receive is what is the difference between gas and nitro helicopters? Today, we want to provide some explanations.
Let's start with gas helicopters. These are otherwise known as 2-stroke engine helis and they run on standard unleaded fuel. This makes them less expensive to run. As you would assume, the fuel for these models is also easier to obtain. You will also find that there is less maintenance.
In the past, gas RC helicopters have been physically larger in size than their nitro counterparts, but this was because the gas engines themselves were quite large. Thanks to improvements in RC technology, there are now smaller gas engines available and subsequently smaller remote control helicopters (for instance, 90-size models).
An example of a gas RC helicopter is the GSR260Z from JR. This model is powered by a 26cc gasoline engine and comes with an optional muffler.
In terms of nitro helicopters, you will generally find that they are more powerful than gas helis and are lighter in weight. These remote control helicopters are usually smaller; incorporating 30- and 50-size models. Because nitro fuel is designed especially for RC applications, it is an excellent choice for high performance models. Some examples of nitro helicopters include the Infusion 700N range from TSA Model. These models can accomodate 90-size nitro engines; giving you extraordinary power up in the air. Another great example is the JR Vibe range. These RC helicopters can utilise 50 to 90-size nitro engines and they are designed for extreme 3D performance.
We hope this article illustrates the differences between gas and nitro RC helicopters. As you can see, each have their advantages. Irrespective of your choice, we trust that you will find a gas or nitro heli that will suit your needs.
