Reading through the list of the Phantom 4 Pro’s features makes you wonder where the evolution of drone technology is going to take us. At the moment the answer to that question is… just about anywhere.

DJI's most powerful camera

Standard on the Phantom 4 Pro camera is a new 1 inch 20MP sensor. Exciting news for all who like moving footage is that this new camera features mechanical shutter to get you much clearer images whilst flying at speed, or, filming fast moving objects. The high level image detail captured when still or at speed by this camera also makes it ideal for those filming with post-production work in mind.

The Obstacles

If you’re flying a DJI Phantom 4 Pro there are no obstacles! Well, none that you won’t know about. The Phantom 4 Pro comes with 5 directional obstacle sensors so if you have your head down making sure the shot looks right you’re unlikely to not know about any impending danger to your craft. If you do happen to get too close to anything then the 4 directional obstacle avoidance system will kick in and your Phantom 4 Pro will be safe from harm.

New Flight Modes 

Draw – as simple as it sounds! The DJI Phantom 4 Pro enables you to draw your flight route on your screen in either Standard or Manual modes.

Standard mode instructs the Phantom 4 Pro to follow the set route ensuring the camera is always pointed in the flight direction while travelling at a constant speed. Manual mode is slightly different in that it follows the route you’ve drawn in only when instructed.

Manual mode also allows you to point the camera in any direction during flight.

Active Track

DJI Phantom 4 Pro ActiveTrack

While not a new feature in the drone world the DJI Phantom 4 Pro does, however, bring new features that help you get the best images and video of moving objects. The Phantom 4 Pro gives pilots the choice of the following Active Track options:

Trace – set the Phantom 4 Pro to track a subject while automatically avoiding obstacles from either a front on or behind perspective.

Profile – your craft will automatically take images from a variety of angles of your chosen subject based on the type of shots you are after.

Spotlight – simple…choose your subject and the camera keeps them in frame while you fly your Phantom 4 Pro anywhere you need to.

Tap Fly

DJI TapFly

I’m not sure DJI could make flying any easier with this function. Simply tap your screen where you would like the Phantom 4 Pro to go and it will adjust smoothly to its new destination taking into account any potential obstacles. Tap Fly comes with 3 different functions:

Tap Fly Forward – tap your screen and the Phantom 4 Pro will fly in that direction.

Tap Fly Backward – tap your screen and your craft will flow in the opposite direction of the tap. Ideal for panning out from your close shots.

Tap Fly Free – allows your camera direction to be changed while the Phantom 4 Pro flies in the direction you’ve tapped.

Return To Home

With the Phantom 4 Pro DJI have made a few improvements on this standard function. The Phantom 4 Pro will record its route as you are flying and when you select Return To Home the craft will choose the best way to get there, obstacle free, based on calculations it makes from the data in its recorded flight log. If conditions have changed or new obstacles are present at the Home your Phantom 4 Pro is returning to it will simply hover at an appropriate height and alert the pilot.

Gesture Mode

DJI Gesture Mode

Due to the level of advanced computer vision technology the Phantom 4 Pro is now equipped to react to gestures made by a subject. If you are looking to take a selfie just lift your arms while facing the camera. The Phantom 4 Pro will place you the subject at the centre of the frame and lock onto you simply through gesture recognition. The next gesture your Phantom 4 Pro will recognise is the arms held out. This tells the craft to begin a three second countdown so you can ensure you’ve got your pose down pat. The beauty of Gesture Mode is that you can appear in a selfie without the photo showing you carrying the remote control.

Flight Time

The DJI Phantom 4 Pro comes with 30 minute flight time. More time in the air means more chance of getting that perfect image. Through the use of the DJI GO app you can track your battery usage and it will also calculate what effect the distance and height that you’ve travelled will have on your remaining flight time. As soon as you reach the minimum safe battery life required to get your Phantom 4 Pro home safely you will get an alert.
