Adding Aerial Combat

ParkZone P-51D

So, you’ve been proudly flying your ParkZone P-51D around your buddies. One by one, you’ve mastered many of the maneuvers that you would use if you were in com-bat with your friend, the one who always says he could take you with his F-27 Stryker.

What he doesn’t know is that you are about ready to make him eat his words. You were thrilled to find out that with some minor modification, you could make your Ferocious Frankie ready to rule the sky with the HobbyZone Sonic Combat Module™. Now, you just have to find a way to get your buddy to meet you at the field.
ParkZone’s rendition of the P-51D Mustang is a thrill to fly. You can almost imagine the feeling of flying over Europe in the mid '40s, looking for the FW-190 and protecting the long-range bombers. Now you can capture the feeling of combat with only a few small steps.

Items Needed:

  • Small Phillips screwdriver (#OO)
  • Medium Phillips screwdriver (#1)
  • Velcro or servo tape
  • Scissors or hobby knife
  • Sonic Combat Module “SCM” (HBZ4020)
  • X-Port extension (included with ParkZone P-51D, and part number PKZ1529)
  • Wire snips

Step 1. Remove 4 small screws that hold SCM together. Next pull apart SCM to get to the two small screws that secure clip of SCM. (Note: you will need to remove two small pieces of tape that cover the screws.) Remove the two screws and clip. Reassemble SCM.

Step 2. We recommend clipping all four sides of the curved mounting tabs on the SCM. This will allow it to fit better against the fuselage.

Step 3. Cut 5 or 6 small pieces of servo tape (about 1” long). Begin stick-ing these on top of each other in the middle of the SCM (between the cut tabs) and until the height of the tape has exceeded the height of the remainder of the tabs that you cut down.

Step 4. Remove wing of your P-51D in order to access the Rx/ESC unit. DO NOT unplug aileron extension.

Step 5. Locate X-Port™ extension (included with P-51D, or part number PKZ1529). Attach lead into Rx. (X-Port plug is located in middle of Rx/ESC unit.)

Step 6. Prepare to mount modified SCM on right side of fuselage. The correct location will be directly above wing fillet (approx. 4” behind exhaust stacks on cowl).
Note: Once SCM is taped to side of fuse, it may cause paint to peel when SCM is removed.

Step 7. Attach SCM to X-Port extension. Trial fit SCM to side of fuselage, making sure you have enough slack to allow ALL connectors to fit completely inside fuse.

Step 8. Reattach wing. Mount SCM to side of fuse. Make certain it is secured properly.

Step 9. Test Sonic Combat Module per the instructions included with the SCM.

Warning: Participating in combat can put your aircraft in jeopardy. Use caution and avoid flying at too low of an altitude.

Combat is at your own risk!

Note: If you prefer, it is also possible to make a small hole in side of fuse where SCM lead could go through. This would allow you not to have the lead exit between wing and fuse, but will obviously cause a permanent hole on the side of fuse.
