Canterbury Sailplane Arrow

Canterbury sailplane Arrow epp slope soarer suitable for dynamic soaring!

The Arrow is one of the latest models from Canterbury Sailplanes, developed from our successful Jazz flying wings, with some obvious and some not so obvious changes.

The Arrow is pretty special, the flying characteristics are superb, it’s quick, very smooth and nicely responsive – even to the smallest of control movements. However the Arrow isn’t twitchy or hyper sensitive, with reduced control movements it could easily be used as a trainer. We don’t normally recommend beginners start with flying wings, but we’d be confident they could learn to fly with the Arrow.

In fact one of the reasons the Arrow was designed, was to provide a flying wing model that was easier to orientate in the sky than conventional flying wings that have tiplet fins only. The Arrows fuselage will be a big help for beginner and novice pilots to tell which way the model is going.

More experienced pilots will appreciate the versatility of the Arrow, it flies in 10 knot winds (even less!) and still grooves around the sky in 20 knot winds without requiring ballast. The Arrows tight turning ability helps you centre thermal lift or stay in narrow bands of slope lift that aren’t normally usable.

The Arrow is aerobatic as well, with increased control movements rolls, loops, combinations and inverted flight are all possible. The Arrow has minimal drag so it holds its momentum really well during maneuvers.

The changes you can’t see relate to where the radio gear goes. On conventional flying wings, the servos, receiver and battery all have to fit into the wing. This usually means you have to use a flat battery pack and need to position all the components in the thicker section of the wing, which limits how you can arrange things. With the Arrow, all the radio gear is positioned in the fuselage and there’s plenty of room for the standard square battery pack. This speeds up the building process and it keeps all the gear central, which has advantages in reducing outboard weight in the wings and providing better survivability in a crash.
